Clarity matters when the stakes are high.
Why Novalta?
Novalta grew out of years spent working in special education settings where clarity, preparation, and collaboration are essential. Across classrooms, virtual programs, IEP meetings, and multidisciplinary teams, the same challenges appeared again and again: complex requirements, limited time, inconsistent systems, and high expectations placed on educators responsible for getting it all right.
Much of the professional learning available to educators focuses on theory or isolated strategies, while the realities of special education demand practical guidance that holds up in real-world conditions. Novalta was created to bridge that gap by capturing hard-earned experience and translating it into professional learning designed for actual implementation.
Built for Sustainability
Our courses reflect a lifetime of firsthand experience supporting students with complex needs, collaborating with families, training support staff, coordinating with related service providers, and navigating compliance-driven systems. Over time, this experience formed a clear understanding of what helps educators succeed: preparation, defensible documentation, clear communication, accessible design, and systems that reduce cognitive load rather than add to it.
Just as importantly, Novalta is built with educator sustainability in mind. By emphasizing clarity, consistency, and proactive planning, our courses aim to reduce burnout, support professional growth, and help organizations retain skilled educators by making complex, demanding responsibilities more manageable and sustainable over time.

I’m Brian Johnsen, an education specialist and learning designer with over a decade of experience working in special education, virtual learning environments, and compliance-driven systems. Throughout my career, I’ve supported students with complex needs, collaborated closely with families, trained support staff, and worked alongside general education teachers, related service providers, and administrators to navigate high-stakes instructional and documentation requirements.
I’ve seen firsthand how unclear systems, last-minute preparation, and fragmented communication contribute to stress, burnout, and unnecessary risk. Novalta was created to share the structures, strategies, and lessons I’ve gathered over time to help educators approach their work with greater clarity, confidence, and consistency.
My approach to professional learning is calm, practical, and grounded in real-world experience. I prioritize accessibility, adult learning principles, and proactive preparation, with the goal of reducing cognitive load and supporting long-term sustainability. At its core, Novalta exists to help educators and learning professionals do complex work well—without burning out in the process.
